Eczema

It is an inflammatory skin condition (non-contagious), with the most common symptoms being swelling, redness, itching, cracking and peeling of the skin. Eczema is the name of a set of skin diseases that have the above symptoms in common. It occurs more often in infants and children; however, it is also common in adults.

The areas most affected are the face, trunk and limbs.

  • Genetic factors
  • Dryness of the skin
  • Anxiety
  • Increased contact with soaps and detergents, as well as constant wetting of hands (irritant dermatitis)
  • Contact with industrial products e.g. metals, tires, resins, clothing, plants, light, perfumes, cosmetics, drugs (allergic dermatitis)

Is there a way to prevent eczema?

  • Regular skin hydration
  • Avoid skin contact with irritating or allergenic substances

How is eczema treated?

The treatment is done with the use of moisturizing-softening creams and mild cleansers (soaps, gels). Topical corticosteroids or their combination with a topical antibiotic cream are the first line of treatment. Systemic antihistamines and corticosteroids can be used in more intense situations.
